Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As Americans we have the opportunity to honor a man who led our country on a path of non-violent social change. He once wrote “if a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live”. Dr. King understood this and gave his life not only for African-Americans, but for all Americans. For this sacrifice, we are all grateful.

As we reflect on the life and legacy of this great leader, each of us should think about how we can serve our fellow man. What can you do today to move your community forward? I encourage each of you to honor this man’s memory with some deed of kindness.
Dr. King once said, "Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."

So on this day, find some way to make a difference in your community. And remember that your service to community is not meant to be set aside for just one day each year, but something that continues throughout the year. Dr. King’s legacy reminds us that serving our fellow man is something that should become who we are and not just what we do.

My roots in Virginia’s Northern Neck instilled within me the value of honesty, hard work, and accountability. In building my family, improving my community, and serving my country these were the principles that guided me, and they will be the guiding principles of our campaign.
